Visit the Roxaboxen
Visit the Roxaboxen is our #9 on free things to do with kids list. This site was the inspiration behind the book by the same name by Alice McLerran. The story was about a group of children that played on a hill they named Roxaboxen. For more information on this area click on our Roxaboxen blog post!
This is a story about a group of kids from the same community that play on a hill that they named Roxaboxen. They would bake, drove cars, had a jail, and kept a cemetery that all were imaginary. This was the place where they got together and had fun and made memories of playing together. The story tells about the kid’s time there and about how even when they grew older- it was still a place they could go back to in their hearts.
One of the most relaxing free things to do in Yuma is to go fishing! This activity on our free things to do in Yuma with kids list is a great way to reduce stress and teach kids about patience. The Arizona Fish in Game provides plenty of opportunities for kids to fish. The local office stocks several local ponds including Fortuna Pond and the Pond at West Wetland Park. Arizona fishers do require a license but, no license is required for kids under the age of 10. Kids ages 10 and over do require a fishing license the cost for that is only $6.00. There is the Mittry Lake Wildlife, Betty’s Kitchen Wildlife, Cabeza Prieta Wildlife, Imperial Wildlife Refuge, Cibola Wildlife Refuge, and Kofa Wildlife Refuge. Rollerblade, skateboard, bike or take a stroll from Gateway Park to West Wetlands
Get your kiddos moving! There are several trails thought out various parks. Gateway has a great view of the Colorado River and that makes any trip from Gateway to Wetlands worth it. There is plenty to see along the way and before you know it you have arrived at West Wetlands Park. The stretch is about half a mile to Wetlands and back to Gateway park. Be sure to bring the proper shoes and plenty of sunscreen.
West Wetlands Park is a great place to take your kids. The park features an awesome play house castle with jungle gym, swings, and airplanes. Your child’s imagination will soar with this awesome play house. There is a beautiful desert garden, butterfly habitat and plenty of places to fly a kite.
