this place and the few old buildings that remain in Hyder The Gila River runs through Hyder, although it is dry most of the time. Hyder is also known for its extremely hot temperatures in the summer .A twelve-car-long Amtrak train, the Sunset Limited, was derailed by an unknown saboteur near Hyder on October 9, 1995. The saboteurs were never identified. The FBI now believes that the “Sons of the Gestapo” terrorist group was fictitious and invented to conceal a plan to wreck and rob a freight train. It is also thought that the sabotage may have been done by a disgruntled rail worker who used the notes to mislead investigators and conceal the real motive.

There is also an interesting legend of Gold Bars.  Vince Breit the Historian in Wellton began to tell the story of the lost gold.  In the mid 1940s they trained the troops in the desert for warfare and used areas like the Barry Goldwater Air force Base for training. They dropped 5 soldiers off in the desert somewhere North of Dateland up near Quartszite and told them to make their way back to the main camp (Fort Horn Monument) near Hyder, Arizona. They were told they were supposed to live off the land.  They only had a few supplies and a compass to get back. They made it back, but on the way back they came across 2 stacks of gold bars in the desert. They counted them at least twice and came up with a total of 220 bars. The biggest hurdle was how to get back to camp ALIVE.They certainly didn’t want anyone else to know of their new found treasure.  Their plan was to come back after their tour of duty and spend the rest of their lives as wealthy gentlemen. They tried to find noticeable landmarks to relocate the bars, then reluctantly headed back to camp. During the war 3 of the 5 were killed and one of the 2 remaining was in a mental hospital. The last surviving member decided to go back and find it alone. He camped in Dateland (this was confirmed by Vince) and spent years looking north of Fort Horn, but of course he never relocated the hoard of bars. Would someone today say that they met with the man that spent years searching the desert with no luck? Maybe just to get us to go looking for ourselves?  So where did this gold come from?
