Close to half a million people head to the Imperial Sand Dunes on some of the busiest days, creating the largest tent city in the area. Some of the most popular holidays draw people from all over the world. For the first time rider big crowds can be a bit overwhelming, and for the young and the restless it means the party has just begun. From local friends, family, famous racers, social media influencers, to famous celebrities you will be surprised who you will find and all the ways to enjoy the famous Sonoran Desert.
How to choose the best time for your visit.
The best time to come would depend on a few factors. Weather, holiday schedule, and crowd attendance.
The most popular times to enjoy the sand dunes are during “Dune season” which are aligned with our awesome winter months. We have plenty of sunshine year around which makes our area one of the best for outdoor activities especially in the winter. Once the weather starts to cool, the crowds start to form at the different dune sections. Crowds can be found at any time, especially on weekends and holidays.
Recently, the Bureau of Land Management of Imperial Valley shortened the time the visitor’s pass is required to enter the dunes, coincidentally it falling under “dune season”. Dune season starts in October and runs through April you will be required to purchase a dune permit with the exclusion of some Holiday Weekends. The “free” days are typically announced at the start of the season.
Weather
During the hot summer months temperatures can easily reach over 105°F. The Desert’s lack of cloud can add to the intensity of the sun’s rays. We highly recommend avoiding any outdoor activity during the summer heat.
Holiday Schedule
Holidays can draw big crowds at the famous desert landmark. Dunners start to migrate to the dunes a few days before major holidays and especially on the three and four day weekends. Some federal holidays are no fee days, please check the BLM website for up to date fee free days.
